Name: The botanical name is Helianthus. The Greek word “helios” means sun and “anthos” means flower. It is aptly named after the sun which it resembles.
Origin: South and West of the USA.
Color: Most sunflowers are bright yellow with dark brown centres, but varieties are appearing now which have tan, orange, maroon or striped petals, and green-yellow centres. Some are even without the central disc, but are fully covered in petals instead.
Availability: A summer flower, but some are available all year round (‘Orit’) and most can be available from late spring to late autumn.
Family: Asteraceae, Aster family
Care Tips: They need a lot of water.
Did you know that lifejackets used to be filled with sunflower stems?
Name: From the Turkish for turban, after its rounded form. Botanical name Tulipa.
Colors: Everything except blue and true black.
Availability: November to May
Origin: Middle East
Care Tips: Tulips continue to grow in water and will curve towards the light. Make allowances for this when putting them in a vase or wrap the stems tightly in newspaper and stand them in water directly beneath a light for a few hours. Tulips have a vase life of just over a week, and buy flowers in bud but with colour showing.
Trivia:
Facts: Tulips are the third-biggest selling flower in Holland and are also very popular in the UK where many are also grown. The painter David Hockney displays them in his studio in Los Angeles and so they appear in many of his autobiographical paintings and for a long time were seen as his trademark.
Language of Flowers: In the Victorian language of flowers red tulips are a declaration of love, making them ideal gifts for Valentine’s Day.
History: In the middle ages tulipmania saw bulbs change hands for the equivalent of £4million pounds a bulb!

What’s the BEST Way to Care for A Bouquet of Fresh Flowers?
Sending or receiving fresh cut flowers is such a meaningful experience for both the sender and the recipient. Since they are so special, we want them to last as long as possible!
Her are some secrets:
- Choose flowers that aren’t fully developed yet – why? The will continue to open over time
- Look for petals that are firm and mark free
- Stems and leaves should be green
- Feed your flowers with the solution that accompanies your bouquet.
- Read the instructions and mix the solution properly. A solution that is too potent can irritate the flowers
- Cust the stems at an angle with a knife – This ensures a clear stem for water passage
- When filling the vase with water and plant food, make sure leaves aren’t kept under water as they can break down and grow bacteria
- Keep flowers away from drafts or extreme heat
- Tropical flowers might have different needs. Check the directions included with the bouquet
Most of all enjoy one of earth’s finest pleasures!
“Some flowers spoke with strong and powerful voices, which proclaimed in accents trumpet-tongued,”I am beautiful, and I rule”. Others murmured in tones
scarcely audible, but exquisetly soft and sweet, “I am little, and I am beloved”.”
– George Sand (Armandine A.L. Dupin), (1804 – 1876) French writer

It’s a FACT! Scientific studies at Rutgers University confirmed that flowers can impact our emotional health in 3 different ways;
1. They bring happiness! How do you feel when you get an order of flowers delivered at your door – especially if they are unexpected. Research at Rutgers showed that those receiving flowers illustrated more smiles, and excitment.
2. Mood Changers: Just looking at flowers make us feel less stressed, depressed and more satisfied. Take pleasure in looking at those vibrant colors!
3. Relationships: Roses…need we say more? Most used on Valentine’s Day to say I love you, or sent for a peace offering. Flowers build relationships. Think about what it does when you bring them to a host or hostess or send them when someone is feeling blue. The point is, they are always memorable.
Never underestimate flower power!

Extra care can make all the difference when it comes to arrangement longevity.
On average arrangements last between 4 & 7 days but with a little extra attention, you can get longer-lasting, more vibrant flowers:
For floral arrangements:
- Keep the vase filled (or floral foam soaked) with water containing a flower food provided by your florist. Follow all instructions on the flower food packet.
- If the flower food solution becomes cloudy, replace it and re-cut flower stems
- Keep flowers in a cool spot away
For loose bunches or boxed flowers:
- Keep them cool place until you can get them in a flower food solution.
- Remove leaves that will be below the waterline of your vase as they will promote bacteria growth
- Re-cut stems by removing one to two inches with a sharp knife.

When it’s time to send flowers, you want to make an impact. Flowers speak to our emotions and to events. Make your selection memorable.
Here’s how…
- Send flowers to a hostess before you arrive for a party or event, and choose a color palette that will mix with her décor.
- Do your best to tailor a gift to the recipient, whether it’s her favorite flower, color or even matches her eyes.
- “Just because” is the best reason to send flowers! Try sending flowers in the middle of an ordinary week for the ultimate impact.
- Get to know your florist. Having someone who knows you and your tastes will make expressing any emotion much easier.
