What’s the BEST Way to Care for A Bouquet of Fresh Flowers?

Sending or receiving fresh cut flowers is such a meaningful experience for both the sender and the recipient.  Since they are so special, we want them to last as long as possible!

Her are some secrets:

  • Choose flowers that aren’t fully developed yet – why?  The will continue to open over time
  • Look for petals that are firm and mark free
  • Stems and leaves should be green
  • Feed your flowers with the solution that accompanies your bouquet.
  • Read the instructions and mix the solution properly.  A solution that is too potent can irritate the flowers
  • Cust the stems at an angle with a knife – This ensures a clear stem for water passage
  • When filling the vase with water and plant food, make sure leaves aren’t kept under water as they can break down and grow bacteria
  • Keep flowers away from drafts or extreme heat
  • Tropical flowers might have different needs.  Check the directions included with the bouquet

Most of all enjoy one of earth’s finest pleasures!

“Some flowers spoke with strong and powerful voices, which proclaimed in accents trumpet-tongued,”I am beautiful, and I rule”. Others murmured in tones
scarcely audible, but exquisetly soft and sweet, “I am little, and I am beloved”.”
– George Sand (Armandine A.L. Dupin), (1804 – 1876) French writer

Extra care can make all the difference when it comes to arrangement longevity.

On average arrangements last between 4 & 7 days but with a little extra attention, you can get longer-lasting, more vibrant flowers:

For floral arrangements:

  • Keep the vase filled (or floral foam soaked) with water containing a flower food provided by your florist. Follow all instructions on the flower food packet.
  • If the flower food solution becomes cloudy, replace it and re-cut flower stems
  • Keep flowers in a cool spot away

For loose bunches or boxed flowers:

  • Keep them cool place until you can get them in a flower food solution.
  • Remove leaves that will be below the waterline of your vase as they will promote bacteria growth
  • Re-cut stems by removing one to two inches with a sharp knife.

So, you received a beautiful arrangement and you don’t want to part with it.  What should one do?  Dry the flowers and save your memories of the experience behind them.  Here’s how:

Step 1:

Remove excess leaves from the flower stems

Cut stems to the desired length being careful nto to go shorter than 6 inches

Keep flowers out of sunlight to preserve color

Secure rubber bands around the arrangement

Step 2:

Secure bouquet in a dark, dry area with excellent circulation such as a closet.

Hang flowers upside down by securing them to a hanger with unflavored dental floss

Let flowers hang for 2-3 weeks

After the flowers have dried, spray them with hairspray for protection

Use the dried flowers as decorations in your house or use them for potpourri!

- DO NOT place in freezer of top shelf of refrigerator
- best kept in a/c room

Corsages should be bagged or boxed to protect them and to hold in moisture. Orchids bruise easily and should always be boxed. Before bagging, mist the corsage lightly. Do not over spray. Too much water will stain the ribbon and cause it to go limp. It can also cause mold. Be sure to leave an air space in the bags so that they will not collapse on the flowers and bruise them. With each corsage, you should include a care card and a corsage pin-two pins if the corsage is large.
